Mill Valley, CA (January 3, 2017) –  Women in Sports Tech (WiST) announces its first effort to empower female college students with a fully-funded internship at a sports tech company in the U.S. in the summer of 2018. WiST launches as the leading organization to bring together companies, their executives, young professionals, and students who share a passion for innovative technologies that impact success throughout the business of sport.

Given that the wide array of sports tech businesses are experiencing explosive growth, projected to exceed $73B by 2019*, WiST offers industry knowledge on emerging trends and new technologies in the exploding sports tech landscape, along with networking opportunities to meet industry leaders and innovators, expanding business partnerships and identifying new opportunities in sports tech.

WiST co-founder and sports tech start-up veteran, Marilou McFarlane is a champion for young women passionate about this intersection of sport and technology. She states, “There are many students who have a strong desire to gain experience and contacts with established businesses and startups in sport technology. Through our extensive network and with the support of our founding corporate partners, adidas, Carbon, GSVlabs, IBM and Silicon Valley Bank, we can now help facilitate these opportunities for women, by connecting them with the business decision-makers who may want to hire them.” Full-time undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited university interested in the fellowship can apply directly through the WiST website beginning on January 3, 2018.

The internship allows college students to use their creativity, communication, and leadership skills to design an experience that matches their career aspirations. Employers will coordinate with students to ensure a meaningful internship is gained by exposing them to various aspects of the company including strategy, marketing, operations, and its business model. In addition, WiST will identify sport tech companies that have expressed keen interest in hosting WiST Fellows.

“Our mission is very clear. We want to help women find opportunities and then have success as working professionals. The connection with passionate employers who share our vision will afford eager students a great window to learn and build relationships with people who are making a difference in the sports tech industry,” remarks WiST board member and faculty advisor for the Carolina Sport Business Club, Dr. Deborah Stroman.
